Originally home to a power generator for south Edmonton, this building now houses the Indeginous Students' Union Office, Sustainability Council, and Dewey’s.
The North Power Plant has an interesting history. The Department of Anatomy previously stored cadavers here - they used to carry them up a narrow stairway with a double turn, leading to some transportation mishaps! The basement once contained a frog pond where frogs were raised to be used in biology class dissections. Later the basement became a rifle range for Canadian Officer Training Corps students and it also held the first extraction plant for the processing of oil sands from Fort McMurray.
Services Offered:
The Sustainability Council provides programs and opportunities for students and staff to incorporate sustainability into their teaching, research, and personal lives; they offer a Certificate in Sustainability for undergraduate students in eleven different faculties. Their office can be found in room 6 on the second floor.
Dewey’s is the licensed lounge of campus, where you can kick back, relax, grab some food (like all day breakfast), or play a game of pool. It is owned and operated by the Students’ Union - which means many students work here, and revenue from Dewey’s actually goes back to support students.
The Indigenous Students' Union Office (ISU) unites members for fun, friendship, and learning on campus. The executives are elected annually to represent Indigenous students at U of A - they ensure the Indigenous student voice is heard on campus and provide social events, lounge area, canteen, fridge, and locker space to members.
